Chemonics International, a prominent international development firm and a major recipient of USAID funding, recently revealed a months-long data breach that exposed the sensitive personal information of over 263,000 individuals. The breach, which began in late May 2023, went undetected for several months, allowing attackers prolonged access to the company’s systems.
Chemonics, a leader in global development projects, such as a $9.5 billion initiative to strengthen medical supply chains, discovered the breach in December 2023 after noticing unusual activity on its systems. According to a notification letter sent to affected individuals, the breach was not fully contained until January 2024, with investigators determining the attackers had gained access as early as May 30, 2023.
After detecting suspicious activity in December 2023, Chemonics implemented immediate security measures, such as password resets and account deactivations. However, further forensic investigation revealed that attackers had accessed sensitive systems undetected for more than six months. Even after the breach was initially discovered, the company continued to detect unauthorized activity through January 9, 2024.
The lengthy investigation concluded nearly a year later, with breach notification letters sent to affected individuals on October 31, 2024. Chemonics confirmed that the exposed data included the personal information of over 263,000 individuals, though the exact nature of the compromised data has not been disclosed.
Chemonics has committed to improving its cybersecurity measures and is offering two years of complimentary identity protection services to impacted individuals. The company is also working with cybersecurity experts to prevent similar incidents in the future.
