Pittman, Dutton, Hellums, Bradley & Mann, P.C. is investigating a data security incident involving CNHI, LLC, a newspaper publishing company headquartered in Alabama. The incident may have resulted in unauthorized access to sensitive personal information belonging to employees or other individuals connected to CNHI.
CNHI, LLC is a news publishing company founded in 1997 that operates local newspapers in communities across the United States. Its publications include well-known outlets such as the Mankato Free Press, Tribune Star, Cumberland Times, Allied News, and Washington Times Herald, among others. CNHI provides both print and digital journalism to more than 130 communities in 22 states and employs over 1,000 individuals nationwide. The company is headquartered in Montgomery, Alabama.
CNHI reported to the Maine Attorney General that it experienced a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to its computer network. Following the discovery of the intrusion, CNHI launched an internal investigation to determine how the incident occurred and what data may have been affected.
The company later confirmed that an unauthorized third party may have accessed and obtained sensitive personal information stored within its systems during a period spanning from April 27, 2025, through May 17, 2025. After identifying the scope of the breach, CNHI conducted a review of the affected data and worked to identify individuals whose information may have been compromised.
Notification letters began going out to impacted individuals on December 8, 2025.
The information exposed in the breach varies by individual. However, CNHI has indicated that the compromised data may include personal details such as names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial account information. The exposure of this type of information can create serious and lasting risks, including identity theft, financial fraud, and misuse of personal credentials.
According to regulatory disclosures, CNHI is providing affected individuals with a written notice outlining the types of information involved in the breach. The company is also offering twelve months of complimentary credit monitoring services to those impacted. While CNHI has stated that it has taken steps to address the incident, details about the specific security improvements implemented have not been fully disclosed.
When sensitive personal and financial information is exposed, individuals may face ongoing risks long after the initial incident. Stolen data can be used to open fraudulent accounts, access existing financial accounts, or commit identity theft. Even if no misuse has occurred yet, the risk may persist for years.
If you received a data breach notification from CNHI, LLC, it is important to remain vigilant by monitoring your financial accounts, reviewing credit reports, and being cautious of unexpected communications requesting personal information.
