Specialty Networks Data Breach Affects 411,000 Patients
Specialty Networks, Inc., a healthcare solutions provider based in Chattanooga, TN, recently announced a significant data breach affecting the protected health information (PHI) of 411,037 current and former patients. The breach, which impacted radiology information systems, digital transcription services, and enterprise practice management solutions, marks a serious compromise of patient data.
The breach was publicly disclosed on August 15, 2024, though unauthorized activity within Specialty Networks’ computer systems was detected much earlier, on December 18, 2023. A thorough forensic investigation confirmed that unauthorized access to its IT environment occurred from December 11, 2023, to December 18, 2023. During this time, sensitive files containing patient information were exfiltrated.
The delay in announcing the breach was attributed to the time required to review and assess the affected files. On May 31, 2024, Specialty Networks became aware that patients’ protected health information had been compromised. Notifications were then issued to its covered entity clients, and by June 24, 2024, efforts to coordinate notifications with affected healthcare providers began. These efforts included verifying affected data and obtaining up-to-date contact information to ensure that individual notifications could be mailed.
The specific types of information compromised varied by individual but may have included names alongside one or more of the following: dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, treatment and condition information, diagnoses, medications, and health insurance details. Affected individuals were notified on August 15, 2024, and Specialty Networks is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to those impacted.
